On test: Arai Quantum Urban Black crash helmet, Steve Houghton, Staffordshire Sentinel 27.08.10
This lid has the features and technology you'd expect from a helmet which takes its cue from Arai's range-topping, but sports-orientated, RX7-GP. So it has Super Complex Laminate Construction, a toughened outer shell section, a triple density inner shell, emergency-release cheek pads and so on.
Safe it is. But the real test is how it feels in day-to day riding. I've been wearing Arai's brilliant Viper for the last four years as well as an old-style RX7-Corsair-and the Quantum a better all-rounder than both. One notable feature is that its visor aperture is wider. This improves all-round vision, particulary when you're glancing over your shoulder for a life-saver.
There's also a simple-to use ventilation system which, combined with a Pinlock visor insert, keeps your screen clear and head cool.
The helmet's removable internal padding is also superb. I've used this helmet on a couple of 300-mile journeys, one cold and one very hot, as well as commuting and general use, and normally forget I'm wearing it.
The Quantum looks classy and its finish is top-notch. As an all-round. sports-touring helmet, it's the business, being comfy and easy to live with. It's also quiet too.
Downsides? I find the Quantum's and any other Arai's, visor removal and replacement mechanism hard to use. I've had one of the firm's technician's show me how, but it still feels a bit awkward. And my old Viper's interior is slightly plusher.
However, I'd pick the Quantum every time. It's a result of Arai's gradual, rather than radical, refinement of its products.
